Scottish Natural Heritage and Scottish Environment Protection Agency

Ph.D Studentships 2009

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) are government bodies responsible to Scottish Government Ministers and, through them, to the Scottish Parliament. The task of SNH is to secure the conservation and enhancement of Scotland’s natural heritage – the wildlife, habitats and landscapes which have evolved through the long partnership between people and nature. SEPA is Scotland’s environmental regulator and adviser, and has a key role in controlling pollution, and working with others to protect and improve our environment.

SNH and SEPA manage a vigorous Research and Development Programme. As part of developing their research work linked to operational priorities, SNH and, for the first time this year, SEPA will fund a number of PhD studentships to support research. In 2009, SNH and SEPA will jointly fund up to three studentships drawn from one or more of the following areas:
• Environmental networks and planning in towns and cities
• Non-native species in the marine environment: understanding and control methods
• Environmental impacts of marine renewables
• Climate change scenarios for species and habitat assemblages
• Economic benefits of nature and the environment

Applications are sought from UK University/Research Institute staff wishing to secure such a studentship. The annual stipend for the studentships will be £13,300 (running for 3 years), with up to £3,000 per year being provided for University fees. The closing date for applications is 26 November 2008. Applications can only be accepted from staff – prospective students interested
in taking up one of the SNH/SEPA awards should discuss this with a potential
supervisor in a university or research institute. An announcement on the successful applications will be made in January 2009. An application form is available by post from Paul Robertson, SNH, Great Glen House, Inverness IV3 8NW, or by email from Paul.Robertson@snh.gov.uk

If you have scientific enquiries about SNH studentships contact Professor Des Thompson, Policy and Advice Manager, SNH, Silvan House, 231 Corstorphine Road, Edinburgh EH12 7AT. Tel: 0131 316 2630 or Email: Des.Thompson@snh.gov.uk

Map out a career in aerial surveying.

Roster system including days, nights and weekends.

6-month temporary contract.

It’s our job to look after the environment and make it a better place today and for generations to come. The more we understand about the English and Welsh landscape, the better we can protect and improve it.

So, the exciting expansion of our aerial surveying team marks an important development in our expertise. More than this though, it offers you the rarest of opportunities to train as an aerial surveyor.

Supervised by an experienced surveyor, you’ll learn to operate state-of-the-art equipment from a light aircraft to the highest ethical and scientific standards. After your initial training period is over, you’ll go on to collect data by yourself, and become a key member of a team delivering integrated spatial products.

We’d prefer you to be a qualified surveyor or environmental scientist. More important is that you’re technically-minded and motivated to work in a purely operational role. You must be willing to work unsociable hours.

New Government Science and Regulatory Agency, York

This is an almost unique opportunity to play a lead role in scientific issues of global importance including food security, climate change and renewable energy.

The Organisation
A new Government Executive Agency will be launched on 1 April 2009. Its role is to provide robust evidence, rigorous analysis and professional advice across a wide breadth of science to Government, international organisations and the private sector.

Supporting a sustainable food chain, a healthy natural environment and protecting the global community from biological and chemical risks are just some of the many challenges for the
new organisation and its Chief Scientist.

The Role
The Chief Scientist will be one of a new team of five Directors reporting to a new Chief Executive, helping to both establish and build the new organisation and to grow its public and commercial sector business. As the top scientist of the organisation you will need to be able to plan strategically to exploit the capacity of both the organisation’s nationally and internationally recognised scientists, and its state of the art facilities. At the same
time, you will help develop and exploit an immediate scientific response capability that can both help tackle high profile national emergencies as well as solve problems for
commercial customers.

You will be expected to maintain and build both the scientific reputation of the organisation and the quality assurance of the science it delivers. As Head of Profession you will be a role model, leader and mentor for the agency’s scientific community as well as looking to attract, recruit and develop leading scientists of the future.

The Candidate
We are seeking a highly credible individual with a passion for excellence in Science. A broad knowledge of sciences will be important, perhaps of a bioscience related discipline. However, due to the impact of human behaviour on the issues the new Agency will research, a strong background in a social science could also be appropriate.

The key requirement however is an ability to establish strong networks between the Agency and other scientists and relevant bodies both in the UK and overseas.
