Duties:

The Principal Scientist position in the Target Generation Unit (TGU) of the Biotherapeutics and Bioinnovation Center (BBC) is responsible for implementing a strategy to identify novel drug targets by discovering rare human DNA sequence variants associated with adverse clinical outcomes. The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of DNA sequencing technologies, and familiarity with analytical techniques for DNA characterization. The successful candidate will apply technical and functional knowledge to design experiments and independently complete work. Significant experience applying DNA sample preparation studies and engineering principles to reduce the time and cost of high-throughput DNA sequencing is essential. The incumbent must have demonstrated productivity in a dynamic collaborative environment. Effective communication skills are essential for directing laboratory scientists and technicians.

Qualifications:
Ph.D. plus >3 years of work experience with high-throughput, single molecule DNA sequencing in the biotechnology industry required. Theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse DNA sample preparation techniques required. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Demonstrated capability to perform independent research. A strong work ethic, team player and willingness to take on challenging tasks are also required.

The company recruiting is looking for a high calibre Principal Applications Scientist to join their expert team of scientists and engineers tasked with developing the company’s groundbreaking DNA sequencing system. The system uses modified protein nanopores embedded in lipid bilayers to rapidly sequence individual strands of DNA, and is operated by an automated fluidics system that forms self-assembling arrays of bilayers, each addressed by its own micro-electrode.

They are seeking a senior level scientist who has pioneered new applications development on current next-generation sequencing platforms. Applicants should have both theoretical knowledge and practical experience of novel experimental design, appropriate sample prep methodologies (DNA isolation, fragmentation etc) and appropriate analysis leading to new ways of measuring biological phenomena.

The successful candidate will likely be a geneticist or genomicist who has worked as part of a multi-disciplinary sequencing team encompassing the whole experimental cycle from sample collection through to high quality publication, the ideal candidate needs to be an innovative thought-leader and scientific risk taker, probably also having links to other key people in the field. He/she will also have done or supervised some bioinformatics work, or have links to clinical or translational environments.

Post Doctoral Fellowship in the Measurement of the Optical Properties of Antarctic Snow – London

Department of Earth Science

The Department of Earth Science at Royal Holloway University of London is a world class department that has Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 5 rating.

Applications are invited for a proposed NERC-funded 2 year research fellowship to study light absorption and chemical photochemistry in Antarctic snowpack as part of the International OPALE campaign (Oxidant production over Antarctica and its export). Specifically to:

  • Determine the optical properties of plateau Antarctic snow at an important ice core drilling site (DOME C) using radiometric measurements above and in snow
  • Adapt a coupled atmosphere-snow radiation-transfer model for photochemistry and fluxes of chemicals from the snowpack
  • Work with European collaborators to probe isotopic change of Nitrate in snow owing to photochemistry.

    You will ideally possess (or be close to be obtaining) a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Glaciology or have an equivalent level of relevant experience, and be prepared to undertake outside work in a remote and cold (~ -30°C) location – i.e. the plateau of the Antarctic Ice sheet. You should also be numerate, and will desirably have a track record of publishing. Experience in the following areas: RT modeling, linux/unix, snow stratigraphy/surveying, cold weather fieldwork, radiometric or optical instrumentation, and languages French/Italian would also be beneficial. The position will also be dependent on medical evaluation for the fieldwork.
